A welterweight unification fight between Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia looks to be a competitive contest that all boxing fans are looking forward to in 2017. With that said, the Oddsmakers are leaning towards Keith Thurman as the (-250) favorite.
When examining the style of each fighter, Thurman seems to have the edge in overall skill, technique, hand speed and footwork. What Danny Garcia brings to the table is a gritty attitude and devastating counter punches.
Garcia certainly demonstrated his heart and grit in the surprising upset victory over Lucas Matthysse. But, that was way back in 2013, and since then Garcia has not faced any major tests. The most notable opponent would be Robert Guerrero (after Thurman had already beat him).
Aside from having defeated a common opponent in Robert Guerrero, Thurman is coming off a tough fight against Shawn Porter which was a real world title contest that put both boxers to the test.
While Thurman showed that he was willing to stand and trade on the inside with Porter, he also demonstrated the ability to maintain distance and work from behind his jab. This was especially true in his win over Leonard Bundu where Thurman predominately used the jab en route to a 12 round UD win.
This is important because Danny Garcia is susceptible to that style and it was evident in his fight with Mauricio Herrera. The pesky jab of Herrera gave Garcia fits and his face was marked up by the end of the fight. What makes matters worse for Garcia is that Thurman doesn't just have a jab -- he has crisp power punches that he uses to follow up that jab.
Prediction: Bet on Keith Thurman at (-250) odds
