The bookies have Juan Manuel Marquez as the (-260) favorite over the underdog Mike Alvarado (+220). Odds courtesy of SportBet.
Mike Alvarado got his nickname “Mile High” because he is from Denver, but the rumors of drug and alcohol abuse have surrounded him since he achieved financial success in the sport. If getting stabbed in a bar fight during a training camp was not enough, boxing fans raised a quizzical eyebrow when Alvarado was caught dumping his car into a lake.
In his last fight, Mike Alvarado suffered a TKO loss to Ruslan Provodnikov where he looked very unhealthy and drained at the weigh in. Alvarado will stepping up from his usual weight division for this fight which is being held at welterweight, so he figures to not have to dehydrate so drastically.
Since his stunning knockout of Manny Pacquiao, some speculated that Juan Manuel Marquez would retire, but he seems to have gotten a boost after hiring conditioning coach Angel Hernandez. He most recently fought to a close close split decision loss to Tim Bradley in October 2013.
It is not surprising that Marquez has been made the betting favorite considering that Alvarado has been inactive for a year since that brutal beating he incurred at the hands of Provodnikov. However, Alvarado is tough and always come to win which makes for some exciting fights.
