Nonito Donaire was at one time a top pound-for-pound boxer, but has since fallen off the list after losing his world titles to Guillermo Rigondeaux back in 2013. After the loss, Donaire has struggled at times in his subsequent fights against Darchinyan and Vetyeka, and was then knocked out by Nicholas Walters.
After suffering the first KO loss of his career to Walters, Donaire has put together a 4-fight winning streak and claimed the vacant WBO super-bantamweight title by defeating Cesar Juarez.
During this time, Donaire has shuffled through trainers and has most recently parted ways with his father and opted for Cuban cornerman Ismael Salas. The juggling of trainers is never a good sign, and in this case there is usually little difference made when the trainer only has a month or two to work with his fighter.
Jessie Magdaleno’s career is on a different trajectory as he is 23-0 with 17 knockouts on his record. It is the power of Magdaleno, along with his southpaw stance, that will pose problems for Donaire in this matchup. Donaire’s chin has shown signs of being vulnerable in recent fights and his will to compete at this stage in his career will be challenged by the young, hungry Magdaleno.
Prediction: Bet on Jessie Magdaleno at (+125) odds
