Canadian boxer Eleider Alvarez made a name for himself after knocking out Lucian Bute in the fifth round of their fight this past Friday in Quebec City.
Bute was an underdog at the betting window, though he was certainly the crowd favorite between these two fighters. Fans in attendance cheered Bute on in the early going as he showed glimpses of his top class form. In fact, Bute was ahead on two judges scorecards heading into Round 5.
Eleider Alvarez began the fight slowly and seemed frustrated after a clash of heads left a cut on forehead. Although, he managed to channel that frustration in the fifth round with and hit Bute with a right hook followed by a straight right that put on him the canvas.
The emphatic win was the biggest of Alvarez's career and has set him up with a fight against light-heavyweight champion Adonis Stevenson, which is sure to sell in Canada. As for Lucian Bute, it seems as though his days of competing at world level are behind him.
