Gennady 'GGG' Golovkin beat Danny Jacobs in a close decision that saw the knockout artist go 12 rounds for the first time in his career.
Even though Golovkin didn't get the knockout, he dropped Jacobs in the 4th round, though his opponent claimed that he was not phased by his power. In any case, Jacobs raised his stock by being the first to take Golovkin the distance.
The Oddsmakers at Bovada betting online had this fight ending within the distance. The betting odds for Golovkin to win by decision were (+375) and the odds for Jacobs to win by decision were a whopping (+1800)!
Jacobs claimed that much of the success he did have was due to him switching stances to southpaw throughout the fight after watching tape on Golovkin and seeing he had trouble with left handed fighters.
Many boxing observers, along with Jacobs' corner, thought he won the fight. The problem was that while avoiding Golovkin's power punches, Jacobs spent most of the fight on his back foot, which was sure to influence the judges scoring in close rounds.
You can see the judges scorecards below and how they scored the opening 3 rounds in favor of Golovkin. Neither fighter did much in those rounds, though Jacobs was the one retreating and Golovkin was the one pressing the fight.
